A Battle Between Rivals

This weekend the Chicago Steel were away both Friday and Saturday. Friday they faced off against the Green Bay Gamblers, and Saturday the Steel took on the Dubuque Fighting Saints.

On Friday, both teams came out ready to play. Five minutes into the first period, Green Bay’s Kyle Novak found the back of the net to make the score 1-0. Less than two minutes later Chris Dodero was able to get the Steel back into the game, tying it 1-all, with Johnny Wingels earning the assist. Within the last six minutes of the first period, Green Bay was able to score three goals, ending the period with a 4-1 lead. Green Bay’s goals were scored by Jake Linhart, Brandon Kirk, and Nicholas Schilkey.

In the second period, Chicago came out ready to redeem themselves. Chicago Steel’s Christian Dvorak answered the call, by lighting up the back of the net three minutes into the second period. Green Bay’s Matthew Weis was able to net a shot to keep the Gamblers’ three-point lead by the end of the second.

In the third period, Chicago came out knowing it was time to work hard. Ten minutes into the third, Thomas Ebbing was able to net his third power play goal of the season, lessoning the distance between Chicago and Green Bay by two. Twelve seconds later Jeff Kubiak scored to make the score, 5-4. The Gamblers were able to hold the Steel from tying the game and sending it into overtime. The final score of the game was 5-4. Tim Davison, Jaccob Slavin, Alex Roos, and Ray Pigozzi all registered assists.

Chris Nell and Alex Sakellaropoulos had a combined total of 26 saves during the 60 minutes of play.

On Saturday, the Dubuque Fighting Saints welcomed the Chicago Steel to the Mystique Ice Center for the first time this season. The Steel came out ready to play, hoping to put the loss from Friday behind them. Dubuque was able to score five goals within the first two periods, while the Steel were not able to get themselves on the board.

In the third, Dubuque scored two more goals making the score 7-0. With five seconds left in the game, Joseph Widmar scored for the Steel, making the final score 7-1, and taking away Dubuque’s shut out. Dubuque goals were scored by Frank DiChiara, Peter Quenneville, Seamus Malone, and John Stevens.

While the Steel were outshot 35-23, Alex Sakellaropoulos and Chris Nell had a combined total of 28 saves in the contest.

Steel Win 2 On The Road

Good morning everyone!! This past weekend the Steel played two away games against the Cedar Rapid RoughRiders and the Waterloo Black Hawks.

We got a chance to talk to Coach Scott McConnell, and hear some of his thoughts on the two games.
“Thursday night we played 50 minutes of hockey the way that we wanted to play. Towards the end, we got a little undisciplined in the game and when that happens we either take penalties or give up chances. I was proud of the way we reacted to the adversity and how we were able to finish it off in overtime. Saturday we played probably the most complete hockey game we have all year. Our defense did a great job of denying the middle of the ice. Most of the shots we gave up were from the outside of the dots. Sakellaropoulos did a great job of swallowing the puck and not allowing second chances. It’s not a very easy building to play in, and we stuck together all 60 minutes and pulled out a win.”
Here is Larissa on Steel TV with our full weekend recap:

This weekend the Steel are at home both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, December 8th, the Chicago Steel will welcome the Des Moines Buccaneers to the Edge Ice Arena. Puck drop is 7:05pm. On Sunday, December 9th, the Chicago Steel will welcome the Youngstown Phantoms to the Edge Ice Arena. Game time is set for 3pm.

On Saturday, we are having a special event for all the fans attending the game. What is it you ask? Saturday is UGLY SWEATER DAY!! Make sure to wear your ugly holiday sweaters and you will automatically be entered to win a signed practice jersey by the entire team! Here is Sak and Heil promoting their ugly sweaters!

We look forward to seeing you and your UGLY SWEATERS at the games this weekend!!
