Sak Commits!!!

Bensenville, IL (April 11th, 2013) — The Chicago Steel would like to announce that goalie Alex Sakellaropoulos has committed to play his college hockey at Union College.  Sakellaropoulos will suit up for the Dutchmen beginning next season.
The Tinley Park, Ill. native is in his second season with the Chicago Steel and has compiled a 20-20-2 record in 2012-13.
“I chose Union because of the education and they have an excellent reputation of producing professional goalies,” Sakellaropoulos said. “The Union coaching staff is great and they w
ere there with me throughout the recruiting process.
“My parents are very excited for me. It will be far from home, but they will make their way out to New York to come see me play.”
Union College is a member of the East Coast Athletic Conference and is under the direction of head coach Rick Bennett.  Bennett has led his squad to two straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including the Frozen Four in 2012.
“Sak’s transformation into the goalie that he has become today, has been exciting to watch,” Steel head coach Scott McConnell said. “Alex has worked tirelessly the last two seasons to put himself in a position to play at the next level.  Union’s track record of developing goaltenders and sending them on to professional hockey over the last six seasons speaks for itself.  There couldn’t be a better place for Alex to go.”
Sakellaropoulos is currently tied for third on the Steel’s all-time wins list and needs two victories to move into the second spot behind Shane Connelly (2003-2005). He has registered a 3.12 goals against average this season and a 0.911 save percentage.
