Top Steel Moments

After just passing the halfway point of the season, the Steel have had many noteworthy moments from the first half of competition. These are the highlights from the first 33 games of the 2014-2015 season.

The Steel stomped Green Bay in their season opener on September 27th scoring a season-high eight goals over the Gamblers. Freddy Olofsson, Zach Osburn, Brendon Kearney, Tyler Sifferlen, Mikey Joyaux, Mason Bergh, Connor Murphy and Robby Jackson all contributed tallies.

On November 22nd, the Steel defeated the Fargo Force in an overtime thriller. Mason Bergh netted the game-tying goal after Chicago pulled netminder Cale Morris for an extra attacker. One minute and ten seconds into overtime, Zach Osburn came up big for Chicago with the game-winning goal.

Saturday, November 1st was another victory for the Steel with seven different goal scorers. Nate Kwiecinski, Ryan Blankemeier, Robby Jackson, Connor Murphy, Tanner Laczynski, Mason Bergh and Jake Bunz recorded goals for Chicago.

John Lethemon had 34 saves in his second USHL start with the Chicago Steel on October 11th. He held Tri-City to just one goal scored in the second period. The Steel came back from the 1-0 deficit to net two third period goals from Connor Murphy and Robby Jackson.

October 17th marked the first of the Steel’s hat tricks for the season with Freddy Olofsson’s first of his USHL career. His final two conversions were the game-tying and game-winning goals for the Steel over the Bloomington Thunder. Mason Bergh’s first career hat trick was earned on November 26th versus Bloomington as he notched the only Steel goals of the matchup. Ryan Blankemeier earned his first career hat trick in the December 5th game against Des Moines. His three tallies contributed to the Steel’s 7-4 victory. Brendon Kearney also recorded his first career hat trick in the Steel’s 8-1 win over Madison on December 12th

On the last day of 2014, the Steel were victorious in Muskegon with an outcome of 4-2 over the Muskegon Lumberjacks. Cale Morris had 40 saves, and the Steel earned goals from Brendon Kearney, Tanner Laczynski and John Ernsting, who netted two.

Lassi Yrjola made 33 saves in his first start for the Steel on January 3rd.  The Steel defeated Muskegon 3-2 with conversions from Dennis Gilbert and recent roster addition, Marcel Godbout.

On a weekend sweep, the Steel overcame the Youngstown Phantoms in back-to-back games. On November 9th, Chicago had goals from Robby Jackson, Brendon Kearney, John Schilling, Ryan Blankemeier and Tanner Laczynski. The next evening, John Ernsting, Connor Murphy, Ryan Blankemeier, John Schilling and Mason Bergh found the back of the net with Schilling and Bergh each netting two.

Mason Bergh led the USHL in points for the majority of the first half of the season. He currently sits second with 40 points (16 goals, 24 assists) in 27 games played. 



      
      
      23 USHL games have resulted with seven or more goals tallied by one team this season. The Steel have scored seven or more in five of those match-ups.
