Chicago Steel Week 14 Game Preview

The Chicago Steel have two games scheduled this weekend. On Saturday, the Steel head to Iowa to take on the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders with puck drop scheduled at 7:05 p.m. Sunday, the Steel have a 3:00 p.m. start in Dubuque against the Fighting Saints.

The Steel (11-11-2) fell to Muskegon in week 13. Tyler Sifferlen tallied one for the Steel in the first period, while Muskegon had two goal scorers, Ryker Killins and Liam McGing. Freddy Olofsson was able to tie the game midway through the second, but Muskegon answered with goals from Steven Merl and Tom Marchin. The Steel made a strong comeback in the third when John Ernsting found the back of the net early on, followed by a game-tying goal from John Schilling. Muskegon’s Bo Hanson broke the even score and led the Lumberjacks to victory with his game-winning goal.

The Cedar Rapids Roughriders (20-6-0) sit atop the Eastern Conference with 40 points. They are heading into Saturday’s matchup coming off back-to-back losses to the Madison Capitols last Thursday and Friday evening.  The Dubuque Fighting Saints (14-7-2) lost to Green Bay in a shootout during last Friday’s battle.

Chicago will return to the Edge Ice Arena in 2015 for back-to-back games on Friday, January 2nd and Saturday, January 3rd. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Steel ticket office at 630-594-1161 or by visiting tickets.chicagosteelhockeyteam.com. Chicago Steel Week 13 Game Preview

The Chicago Steel have one game on the docket this weekend before taking a short break for the holidays. On Friday, the Steel head to Michigan to take on the Muskegon Lumberjacks with puck drop set for 6:15 p.m. CST.

The Steel (11-10-2) split their week 12 games against Madison and Green Bay. Friday's 8-1 Steel victory in Madison was highlighted by Brendon Kearney’s hat trick and John Lethemon’s 36 saves. Mason Bergh and Freddy Olofsson each notched two goals as well. On Saturday, Connor Murphy and Connor McDonald tallied the two Steel goals but it wasn’t enough to beat the Gamblers as Chicago fell 4-2.

The Muskegon Lumberjacks (17-7-1) are currently in second place in the Eastern Conference. The Lumberjacks are coming off a two-game split with the Sioux Falls Stampede. In their first matchup this season, the Steel lost to Muskegon 4-3. These two teams will face-off against one another three times in the next 15 days.

All Access: Brendon Kearney

A native of Northville, Michigan, Brendon Kearney has donned a variety of sweaters in his hockey career. He played for the Detroit Honeybaked Midget Major, the USHL's Team USA, the Langley Rivermen of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), and now the Chicago Steel. The Steel acquired Kearney in November of 2013, and he was named assistant captain for the 2014-2015 season. Kearney led the Steel to victory in Madison this past weekend, tallying his first career hat trick in the process. We had an opportunity to chat with the Steel forward prior to this weekend's game.

Q: You already have six more goals than you did last season and scored your first career hat trick last weekend, congratulations. Have you made any adjustments to your play this season?

A: As far as Madison goes, it was a few lucky bounces going to the net. I worked hard going to the net, the puck found my stick a couple of times, and I was able to make the best of it. It was nothing too special or out of the ordinary. My biggest mindset this year was that I needed to shoot the puck a lot more. I talked about it with Coach McConnell at the end of last year, and it has been my main focus. I think this year I’m definitely shooting the puck and shooting it with a lot more confidence, which seems to be paying off for me.

Q: Do you have any specific hockey goals for this season?

A: On a team level, we want to be a playoff team and have a shot to play for a championship. That’s my biggest goal and my number one goal going forward. My second goal is to find a place to play college hockey. Being in the USHL, you see it pretty much on a weekly basis - kids finding a place to play. I definitely hope I can find one as well here soon.

Q: What do you like most about playing for the Steel?

A: It’s a great group of guys. Obviously, we brought a big corps back from last year, and we picked up right where we left off. It’s a great group of guys who you can go out and play your game with. You don’t have to be afraid of making mistakes or getting into trouble with anyone. It’s a group of guys who understand each other and work well with the coaching staff. It’s fun to come to the rink everyday. It’s a great group of guys to be around and continue to work with and get better with.

Q: We know you’re a Detroit Red Wings fan. Did that factor in to your decision to pursue hockey?

A: When I was younger I would always go over to my grandpa’s house, and he would have Wings games on. I was still too young to know exactly what it was, but I was intrigued by it. That was how my parents knew to start me in hockey, and I picked it up and ran with it.

Q: When did you start playing hockey, and have you always played forward?

A: I started skating around age three. Everybody got a chance at goalie, but I didn’t like it too much. I played defense for maybe half a year at one point, and it just didn’t feel right either, so it’s always been forward for me. Getting the chance to score goals is pretty fun.

Q: You’re a veteran player for the Steel this year and you were named one of the assistant captains. Can you talk about the type of leadership you bring to the team and how you’ve helped new players adjust?

A: I think the biggest thing for me is to lead by example. I’m not a huge vocal guy, but I can be if it’s needed. I like to go out and work hard and lead in that way, to show the newer guys what it takes to compete on a nightly basis in this league. It can be tough jumping from AAA hockey or high school hockey to [the USHL]. The grind is a lot different, and I try to share what I know with them, especially about maintaining over a long season. Again, I do that by leading through example.

Q: Speaking of leading by example, you are very involved in the Steel’s school programs and other community programs such as Project CARE, Hockey 101 and Score With Reading. Tell us a little about why you are so devoted and what you love about participating in these initiatives.

A: I think it’s just fun. I remember growing up and going to meet the Red Wings or the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL, they’re right down the street from where I grew up, and it was a big deal to me when I got to meet those hockey players or people I looked up to. I think it’s one of those giving back things, and I hope I can have as big of an impact on these kids as hockey players did on me when I was growing up and idolizing them. It’s fun to get out and see all the kids. You walk through the halls of the school and look like a rock star because the kids are excited, so it’s a lot of fun, a good time.

Q: Can you talk about your hometown versus Chicago and the kind of support system you’ve found here in your billet family?

A: It’s been different, but it hasn’t been too big of an adjustment. [Detroit and Chicago] are really big hockey cities. Obviously, it’s tough to be a Red Wings fan down here. But it hasn’t been too big of a struggle to adjust because [Chicago] is a fun town. My billet family has made things incredibly easy on me to adjust and help me feel like I’m still at home. Even though I have two sisters at home and four little billet brothers here, it’s a great set-up and they do a great job. They come to every home game, and my billet brothers would definitely come to practice if they didn’t have school.

Q: The team has a short break coming up to celebrate the holidays. Do you have any plans while you’re at home?

A: I plan to spend time with family and friends. It’s tough during the long season to keep in contact with everybody, so I will try to see as many people as I can. I want to enjoy the break and rest up because we have a big second half of the season coming up, and we’re looking to make up some ground there.

Q: You head to Muskegon (17-7-1) this Friday night to take on the Lumberjacks. They’re sitting second in the Eastern Conference right now. How are the Steel preparing for this game and what comments do you have about the matchup?

A: Tomorrow night is a huge game for us. It’s the last game going into break, just one game on the weekend. We need two points, and that’s all we’re focused on right now. We’re getting in the mindset to go out and only play 60 minutes because that’s all we’ve got this weekend. We need to play the full 60 minutes hard, make it tough on them, and hopefully come out with a big two points going into break.

Player Appearance: Santa Visits Kennedy Elementary School

Steel players Brendon Kearney and Jake Bunz helped Santa pass out goodie bags to students at Kennedy Elementary School in Schiller Park. The Schiller Park Fire and Police Departments bring Santa to local schools each year so that students can experience the joy of the holidays with classmates before their winter break. Students were thrilled to see Santa and his helpers (Kearney and Bunz). Thanks to the Schiller Park Fire and Police Departments as well as Kennedy Elementary for inviting the Steel to this special event!

Chicago Steel Week 12 Game Preview

The Chicago Steel have a pair of games on the schedule this weekend. The Steel will make the short trip up to Madison to face the Capitols on Friday evening. On Saturday, the Steel return home to take on the other Wisconsin USHL team, the Green Bay Gamblers. Puck drop for both games will take place at 7:00 p.m.

The Steel (10-9-2) split their two games last weekend with a 7-4 win against the Des Moines Buccaneers Friday coming two days after the Steel fell 2-1 in Youngstown. Mason Bergh tallied three goals and one assist across the two games to extend his league-leading points total to 34, while Ryan Blankemeier scored three goals on Friday against the Bucs for his first career hat trick. The Steel will be without Cale Morris and Robby Jackson this weekend, as they suit up for the USA Junior Select Team in the 2014 World Junior A Challenge.

In their franchise’s first year, the Madison Capitols (10-6-4) got off to a very slow start but have found their stride as of late. Since the Steel beat the Capitols 2-1 in early November, Madison has gone 7-0-2. Forward Will Johnson leads the Capitol offense, recording 14 of his team-high 26 points over their last eight games.

The Green Bay Gamblers (8-12-2) have dropped their last three games, including a 6-3 loss to Cedar Rapids on Wednesday. Prior to making the trip to Chicago, the Gamblers will host the Des Moines Buccaneers on Friday evening. This season, the Steel have split their two meetings with Green Bay. Chicago won 8-2 on opening weekend, before falling 4-3 in overtime one week later.

Tickets for Saturday’s game are still available and can be purchased by calling the Steel box office at 630-594-1161 or by visiting tickets.chicagosteelhockeyteam.com. In support of Toys for Tots and the Wounded Warrior Project, we have planned a Heroic Holidays theme for Saturday’s game. Additionally, we are holding a 50/50 raffle benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project during the game. Read more about these outstanding nonprofit organizations here. Finally, Skate with the Steel will take place immediately following Saturday’s contest. Join us at the Edge this weekend and become a hero this holiday season!

All Access: Dennis Gilbert

Leading all Steel defensemen with 12 assists and one goal, Dennis Gilbert has proven to be a huge asset for Chicago in his first USHL season. He currently ranks 7th on the team in points (13) and 2nd in assists, yet remains humble and credits the depth of the team for his active offensive play. The Steel drafted Gilbert in Phase II of the 2014 USHL draft. Last season, Gilbert played in the Ontario Junior Hockey League for the Buffalo Junior Sabres and ranked 4th in assists among defensemen in the OJHL. Looking forward, Gilbert has high expectations for himself and his teammates as the Steel approach 2015. We had a chance to catch up with #8 this week.

Q: Can you talk about your play so far this season? How have you been able to come in and find success in your first year with the Steel?

A: I think a lot of it goes to what I was able to do in the offseason. I played Junior A last year up in Canada. It’s a different style of play, it’s way more offensive, so stepping in here this year the adjustment wasn’t as much offensive as it was defensive. I was able to come in and do my thing. The coaches have been great in helping me make the transition. We have some really good forwards. You can check, but I’d bet a bunch of my assists are breakout passes and watching Mason Bergh go down the ice like he does. We have a really deep forward corps here. It’s all of us putting the work in and getting it done.

Q: How have you adjusted your defensive play, and has the adjustment been tough?

A: Yeah, it was. It’s a lot quicker. The puck moves a lot faster in this league. The speed of the players is similar to where I played last year - but the puck movement - the puck zips around and you can get caught out of position. So that’s where I’ve been able to focus defensively and worry about that aspect of things. I think once I adjusted to the speed of the puck movement, I was okay because I’ve always been a bigger kid, pretty fast.

Q: What do you like about playing for the Steel?

A: I love it. I have loved every second of being here. My billet family is absolutely great for me. It’s a great group of guys, too. Last year I was one of the youngest on my team, and this year we’re all in the same age range. We’re all going through the same thing. We’ve been out of high school for a year or two and are looking to make the jump to college. Everyone has a lot in common. It’s a great group of guys and has been a lot of fun so far.

Q: How has playing with this team as well as in the USHL helped your development as a player?

A: I think the farther you move up, especially in hockey, everyone tends to have the same skill set, making it easier to play. I think it’s because you’re not worrying about ‘is this guy going to catch my pass, is this guy going to know how to make this read’. We all think the game pretty much the same, so it makes playing easier especially as a defensemen because if you come back, you feel pressure, you can just leave [the puck] off, and one of your guys is going to come through and pick it up. It’s really good with relieving pressure in the zone. On the breakouts too, everyone knows where to be. There aren’t a lot of mental breakdowns. When there is, we’re in great shape with Coach McConnell - we workout every day - and we know we’re in shape. When things go bad and you get caught in your zone, the habits we built up in preseason and so far this year are good habits. You’re still playing smart, you get the puck out and get your change. I think it’s been great as far as playing with guys who have the same skill set and think the game at the same level. Last year, for me, it wasn’t that way.

Q: How do you prepare prior to a game?

A: I don’t really have rituals or anything like that, but this year there is a little down time between our warm-up and going on the ice. Coach McConnell likes to give us a little talk. Some guys like to sit and tape their sticks or sit and eat a granola bar or a Gatorade. I can’t do that. I have to go out after our pregame talk. I go out for a 5-7 minute jog to get my blood flowing, so you’re not sitting still thinking about stuff. You go for your run, you come back, get dressed, and go on the ice. There’s no time to worry about anything, just kind of clear my mind.

Q: Did you have any goals coming into this season or anything you wanted to accomplish in your time with the Steel?

A: I think that any player coming into this league wants to make a clean adjustment and do it as fast as you can. I know of guys that came into this league last year, and it took them 40 games to adjust. I know guys that came in, and it took them two preseason games to adjust. I knew that once I adjusted, that with the coaching staff and playing with guys that think the same and have the same skill sets, it’s only going to set you up for great things during the year. As far as ‘I want this many points’ or to be a ‘plus this’, it wasn’t about that for me. It was just about adjusting to the speed of the game because this is by far the closest thing to college hockey. I thought that by coming to this league, it would give me the best opportunity to develop and adjust to this style of play, so it’s not as big of a jump from Junior to college. In other Junior leagues, it’s a bigger jump. I thought that by coming into this league, it would make that jump a lot smaller and easier. And you see it in college, the best guys played in this league beforehand.

Q: You were on the CSS Players to Watch List. Can you talk about what that meant to you?

A: It’s obviously a great honor. To be completely honest, it doesn’t mean anything though. It’s a list. There are six more lists to come out or something like that before the end of the year. So it’s great with me, Robby, and Tanner getting on there - it’s awesome - and Freddy getting drafted last year, that’s awesome. But you can ask me, Robby, and Tanner, it’s cool, but it doesn’t mean anything to us because we weren’t drafted. It’s good that we’re being watched more and being noticed, but at the same time, there are guys that didn’t make that list who want to be on that list, so they’re chasing you. We’re all Cs, we want to be Bs. The Bs are chasing the As, so everybody is hungry to play their best and help their team the most. To be drafted at the end of this year, I think that’s a lot of our individual goals, but it doesn’t mean anything yet because there’s still a lot more to go. I mean you can ask me if I were to get drafted, and then I’ll tell you what it means to me because that’s every kid’s dream.

Q: Do the Steel have any team goals or focuses for the remainder of the season?

A: Right now, we only have three games left before a short break. Cale is a big part of our team and so is Robby, so those are two voids we’ve got to fill while they’re away (Both will be playing for the U.S. Junior Select Team at the 2014 World Junior A Challenge in Saskatchewan). I know Johnny’s going to do a great job in net, and I know our forwards are going to do great without Robby too, but we’ve got three games left. We want to win these three games and go into break happy. We want to get these six points here and get back in the driver’s seat after that little skid we had last week. As far as long-term goals, this is a playoff team. My team last year made the playoffs. We weren’t a playoff team - we were a skilled team. This is a playoff team. The guys on this team work hard, they’re simple. You can tell with some of the comebacks we’ve had, this is a playoff team. Our goal is just to get to the playoffs, and I think once we get there, whether we’re the fourth seed in the conference or the one seed, you’ll see the Chicago Steel go far.

Q: You play Madison and Green Bay this weekend. What are your thoughts on these two games?

A: You can see with both teams, they have a few guys that are really skilled, but we’ve played them both before. We split with Green Bay and beat Madison. They’re both great teams, and if you look at the standings, they’re teams that are right with us or are chasing us. These are big games for those teams this weekend, so they’re going to be coming out hungry. They want to move up, and they want us to move down. I think it will be a hard-fought game. I think both of those teams play kind of a similar style to us. They aren’t very pretty about it. They just like to go to work and get it done. It will be a close, hard-working game, but we’re confident in our guys and our skills. As long as we can out-work them and play our style of game, we should be in great shape for this weekend.

Chicago Steel: Heroic Holidays

This Saturday, the Chicago Steel is proud to host our Heroic Holiday theme night, in support of two outstanding nonprofit organizations. We are excited to offer fans the opportunity to become a "hero" this holiday season through a toy donation drive benefitting Toys for Tots and a 50/50 raffle with proceeds donated to the Wounded Warrior Project. Fans that bring a toy for donation will receive a $6.00 walk-up ticket to Saturday's Steel game against the Green Bay Gamblers.

Major Bill Hendricks founded the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program in 1947. Since that time, the program has grown tremendously, collecting millions of toys annually to distribute to children in need. The mission of the Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December and distribute those toys during the holiday season to less fortunate children in the local community. Donated gifts are distributed with the goal of inspiring hope in these children as well as encouraging them to find joy this time of year. These local campaigns take place across all 50 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. Their success depends upon community members’ generosity and support as they unite to support a better future. More information on Toys for Tots can be found at http://www.toysfortots.org.

The Wounded Warrior Project was founded in 2003 by former veteran, John Melia, who was severely injured in a helicopter crash in Somalia in 1992. Following the events of September 11, 2001, Melia wanted to create a nonprofit organization to “honor and empower Wounded Warriors” and help others avoid the struggles that he and his family ran into following his return from combat. The organization offers 20 different programs and services with the focus on four main areas: mind, body, economic empowerment and engagement. WWP has served more than 40,000 veterans over the past decade and continues to aid in the recovery and rehabilitation of our brave soldiers. More information on WWP can be found at http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org

We want to thank all Steel fans in advance for their generous and caring donations to these two organizations. We hope to see you at the Edge on Saturday! Don't forget that we will also have "Skate with the Steel" immediately following the game.

The Steel travel to Youngstown for a Wednesday morning game against the Phantoms and then to Des Moines for a Friday evening matchup against the Buccaneers. Puck drop is set for 9:15 a.m. CST on Wednesday and 7:05 p.m. on Friday.

The Chicago Steel (9-8-2) dropped both games in Bloomington last week. On Wednesday, the Steel took a 3-2 lead into the final period off of Mason Bergh’s hat trick, but two late Thunder goals gave Bloomington the 4-3 victory. Saturday, the Steel fell behind early but tied the game at two behind goals from John Schilling and Tyler Sifferlen. In the final period, Bloomington tallied the game-winning goal in the 3-2 victory. Dennis Gilbert and Freddy Olofsson each tallied three assists on the weekend.

The Steel are 2-0 against Youngstown this season, defeating the Phantoms 5-2 and 7-5 in early November. Youngstown has scored the second most goals in the league this season with 79.

The Des Moines Buccaneers (12-6-2) currently sit in second place in the Western conference and are coming off a three game weekend sweep with wins against Tri-City, Lincoln and Omaha. This is the second and final time the Steel will face the Buccaneers this season, defeating Des Moines 7-2 on November 1st.
