Chicago Steel Week 19 Game Preview

The Chicago Steel travel to Wisconsin this weekend for road matchups against the Madison Capitols and the Green Bay Gamblers. On Friday, the Steel face the Capitols with play set to begin at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, Chicago takes on Green Bay at 7:05 p.m.

After a 7-1 road loss in Waterloo last Friday, the Steel (15-17-3) defeated the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Saturday in thrilling fashion to split their weekend games. Down 3-1 in the final period, Freddy Olofsson scored twice to tie the game with under a minute remaining in regulation. In overtime, Ryan Blankemeier lit the lamp to defeat the Fighting Saints. Mason Bergh (1g, 1a) and Freddy Olofsson (2g, 1a) are now tied for the team lead with 17 goals this season.

The Madison Capitols (17-11-6) are coming off two Week 18 losses. Last Wednesday, the Capitols were defeated in overtime by the Lincoln Stars and then fell to the Bloomington Thunder 5-1 last Friday. The Steel are 2-0-0 against the Capitols this season, defeating Madison 2-1 in October and 8-1 in December. In the December meeting, Brendon Kearney registered his first career hat trick.

The Green Bay Gamblers (13-19-4) fell to the Sioux City Musketeers twice last weekend, dropping Saturday’s game 4-1 and Sunday’s game 6-2. The Steel are 1-1-1 against the Gamblers this season, outscoring Green Bay 13-10 across the three matchups.

The Steel are on the road for the next three weeks but will return to the Edge on February 20th-22nd for three home games against Green Bay, Muskegon and Madison. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Steel Ticket Office at 630-594-1161 or by visiting tickets.chicagosteelhockeyteam.com.

All Access: Nick Olczyk

Hockey has always been a part of Nick Olczyk’s life. Hailing from Long Grove, IL, the Steel forward spent his early years playing hockey for local teams before suiting up for Team Illinois U16s. Selected in the 2013 USHL Phase II Draft, Olczyk began his USHL tenure with the Waterloo Black Hawks, appearing in 43 games over the last year and a half. Shortly after the New Year, the Chicago Steel acquired Olczyk through a trade. Olczyk expressed his appreciation for the Steel and is happy to again be playing hockey in the Chicago-land area, near his family. We sat down with #29 to discuss his hockey background, his USHL career and the second half of this season.

Q: You’re a second year player in the USHL, having played for the Waterloo Black Hawks over the last year and a half. You were recently acquired by the Steel and have been here for almost one month now. What has the transition been like for you?

A: It’s been relatively smooth, especially with the support of family, teammates and coaches. I went on a pretty good run last year with Waterloo to the Clark Cup Finals, and ended up losing in game five. But I learned a lot about myself and gained experience in the playoffs and the championship, and definitely grew a lot as a player and as a person. I think it was time for a change though and Chicago was the best place for me to come, team-wise, coaching-wise and obviously I’m home now. Home-cooked meals and sleeping in my own bed is pretty nice. My family was really happy. Tears of joy were shed when I called them and let them know that I was coming home to play for the Chicago Steel. But the transition has been really good so far and it’s been easy with the help of everyone here in Chicago.

Q: You obviously come from a hockey family and have two brothers with previous USHL experience. Can you talk about your background with hockey and when you started playing?

A: Yeah, ever since I was young, I was thrown into the spotlight of hockey. I know my parents would have supported me if I didn’t want to play hockey or have anything to do with it, but luckily enough I was passionate about it right away. My mom always says that I was born with a stick in my hands. Like you said I have two brothers that came through the USHL, Eddie and Tommy. Now Tommy plays at Penn State and Eddie graduated from UMass after playing hockey there for four years and is now a coach for Utica College in New York. We’re definitely a hockey family; we have a plaque in our house that says, “We interrupt this family for hockey,” and it’s very true. I am fortunate to have a father that knows the game as much as he does and has been around it for what seems like forever. Just having a guy like that to talk to whenever is tremendous. I have a very supportive family, with my brothers giving me advice and my sister, who goes to the University of Alabama, always coming to games when she can. It’s a real family effort and at the end of the day, hockey aside, it’s family that drives us and we are very fortunate to be as close as we are.

Q: What do you enjoy most about playing for the Chicago Steel?

A: For the short time that I’ve been here, it’s that I’m learning new stuff every day. The systematic things on the ice, how to improve your game, the off-ice lifting, I think it’s a lot of the little things that go on behind-the-scenes. From the front office to the trainers to the coaches to the team in the locker room, I am learning new stuff every day. My first impression of the Steel was a very professional, first-class organization. Now that I’ve been here a little while, I’m getting adjusted to everything and getting to know everyone’s name. It’s been a really nice fit so far and I’m looking forward to future success.

Q: Do you have any goals for the remainder of the season?

A: I think every guy in that locker room wants to win a Clark Cup Championship. Obviously everyone in the league feels the same way but I think the thing that separates us is the work ethic. We are going to work, we have skill, and if we put skill and will together then we are going to have success. I think individually I just want to get better; I never want to be satisfied and I always want to improve to help the team win. But collectively, we want to have success and success means a championship.

Q: Tell us a little about the different community programs that you have participated in with the Steel and the Black Hawks.

A: I think here, you get to deal with a lot more people, where as Waterloo, being a smaller town, it’s a lot of the same people over and over again. A lot of great things in Waterloo though, we would go during Thanksgiving and serve meals to elementary kids and the community. Doing that, and going to the elderly home and playing Bingo with the folks there, it was great. Anything you can do to help out the community is a plus. I’ve been to Hockey 101 here in Chicago at Rupley Elementary, and it was great to help the kids. We’re here to teach the kids about the sport of hockey and the Chicago Steel, and help the community as much as we possibly can.

Q: You’ve committed to Colorado College. What led you to that decision and what is it like knowing that several of your Steel teammates will be playing there as well?

A: It was a pretty intense but very exciting process that I went through. I went out on a visit there in early October and I ended up committing just a few weeks later. The coaching staff is unbelievable there, Coach Mike Haviland and Assistant Coaches R.J. Enga, who you guys know very well, and Gene Reilly. The Director of Hockey Operations, Chris Kawano, has been really unbelievable too. When I went on a visit there, I felt that it was the place for me and on the plane ride home I knew I was going there. It was my first college visit other than visiting my brothers and walking around their campuses. It was just a breathtaking experience though, every day in Colorado Springs is a postcard. Obviously we have a couple other guys going there and it’s good to get to know them so that I know some teammates when I go there because I’ll be in the USHL for another year or two. But definitely to know some guys is good, and it will help with the acclimation process when I get to Colorado College.

Q: This weekend the Steel head to Wisconsin to compete against the Madison Capitols and the Green Bay Gamblers. What is the team’s mindset for these two road games?

A: Yeah, Madison and Green Bay are really good teams. We played against Madison when I was in Waterloo earlier this year and they’re really well coached under Luke Strand. I know him very well and he’s a hard-nosed coach. They’re going to play hard but we have that mindset too, so it will be a really good game. And Green Bay is struggling a little bit this year, but they are still a good team. There are no teams in this league that you can take a night off with. This will be a really big weekend for us. I think we took a great step in the win against Dubuque. We have to have continued success because to a certain extent, our backs are up against the wall for the playoffs, but if we go on a run here, we will be just fine. So it starts this weekend and it will be a big two games for us.

Saturday, the Steel will return home to the Edge and take on the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Friday’s puck drop is at 7:05 p.m. Saturday’s game will begin at 7:00 p.m. Reminder that Saturday’s home game is also Mascot Night!

The Chicago Steel (14-16-3) are coming off a win and an overtime loss against the Team USA U-17 Juniors last weekend. Last Friday, the Steel fell behind early but responded with three straight goals from Connor Murphy, Brendon Kearney and Tyler Sifferlen for the 3-1 victory. Saturday, the Steel found themselves down by two goals in the third period but answered with two late goals from Ryan Blankemeier and Freddy Olofsson. However, Team USA found the back of the net in overtime and the Steel fell 3-2.

The Waterloo Black Hawks (10-20-3) are coming off a weekend split with Sioux Falls, dropping Friday’s game 7-3 but winning on Saturday 3-1. Recent Steel additions Marcel Godbout and Nick Olczyk travel back to Waterloo to face their former team for the first time.

The Dubuque Fighting Saints (20-9-3) lost twice to the Team USA U-18 Juniors last weekend, with one game going into a shootout. The Fighting Saints are currently in third place in the Eastern Conference. The Steel lost to the Fighting Saints 5-1 in Dubuque at the end of 2014.

All Access: Marcel Godbout

Prior to the end of 2014, Marcel Godbout was acquired from the Waterloo Black Hawks by the Chicago Steel. The Center Line, MI native has surpassed his 21-game points total with Waterloo in his first month with Chicago. Godbout played for Shattuck St. Mary's and then suited up for the Des Moines Buccaneers during the 2013-2014 season as well as the USA Juniors in the 2013 World Junior A Challenge. We had the opportunity to sit down with the recent roster addition to talk about his hockey career and his transition to the Steel.

Q: You’re a veteran player in the USHL. In your first USHL season, you played with Des Moines, and this season the Steel acquired you from Waterloo. Can you talk about those three different teams and how you’ve adjusted to the move?

A: Last year I started off in Des Moines. I loved it there – it’s a great organization and I have a lot of good friends there that I still talk to. And then I got moved to Waterloo at the beginning of this year; it’s another great organization with a lot of history. Both teams are in Iowa, and moving here to Chicago is a lot different from there. It’s a bigger city with a lot more to do. I like it here a lot. We have a really great team, and I’m excited for the second half of the season. Moving mid-season hasn’t been too big of an adjustment. I moved away from home when I was 14 and have been on my own since, so I am kind of used to it. Everyone here is very welcoming, so that makes it a lot easier.

Q: You have been a big contributor with six points in 10 games played with the Steel. Can you talk about your play and the factors that have helped you to be successful?

A: I think it’s getting the opportunity to showcase what I have. Coach has given me an opportunity to play in key spots. On the power play I’ve gotten a few points. Bounces are going my way, I’m playing with great players and I’m getting set up in different positions.

Q: How has the USHL helped in your development as a player?

A: The USHL is a great league. You play against different aged guys, so you either have to step up, or you won’t play too much. I was 17 last year playing against 20 and 21 year olds. That’s not something that every other kid gets to do. I think it’s really good. Obviously, I’ve had three different coaches, so I’ve learned different things from each and every one of them. I think it’s a great opportunity for me to be here.

Q: You’re committed to Michigan State. Tell us about what led you to the decision and about what you’re looking forward to?

A: It’s a great school and close to home. Obviously for my family that’s a lot better since I’ve been away for the past five years. I’m excited to be able to play there. It’s a great honor.

Q: You played in the 2013 World Junior A Challenge, and recorded one assist in four games. Can you talk about that experience and how it was playing at that level?

A: That was a great tournament, and we were lucky enough to win it. Just watching those guys, some of the guys who are in there, you have [Nick] Schmaltz and Kyle Connor, who was there again this year. There were a lot of great players on the team, and just to watch it and be a part of it was really, really cool. And obviously to win gold was nice too.

Q: What do you enjoy about playing with the Steel?

A: Our team is the closest team that I’ve ever been on, even with me only being here for a month so far. You can tell that all the guys genuinely care about each other. We all want to be here for each other, and we want to win. It’s good to be a part of.

Q: Do you have any routines or rituals that you go through prior to games?

A: I am kind of superstitious with the way I get dressed. I always put my left side on first, but I’ll tie my right skate first. I normally eat at the same time, show up to the rink at the same time, tape my sticks the same way. Other than that, not much though.

Q: This weekend the Steel are in Iowa to face the Waterloo Black Hawks on Friday night and then home at the Edge against the Dubuque Fighting Saints on Saturday. What is the team expecting from these two match-ups?

A: Last weekend was good. We got three of the four points – wish we could have got the fourth one. But we’re really excited for Friday, going to Waterloo. Because I used to play there, it’s going to be a little bit weird going back, but it will be nice to play against them. I think the boys are ready. Hopefully we’ll play well, get two points there, and then come home. You can’t ask for anything better than that – Mascot Night against Dubuque. It should be a good game.

23 USHL games have resulted with seven or more goals tallied by one team this season. The Steel have scored seven or more in five of those match-ups.

Steel Players Peter Tischke, Marcel Godbout, and Nick Olczyk visited Rupley Elementary School in Elk Grove Village this week. They taught students hockey fundamentals via the Steel's Hockey 101 Program. Students were excited to score against the players while utilizing their new skills. Thank you to Rupley Elementary for welcoming the Chicago Steel!
